11 Stitching questions

Jayne  tagged me in the newest game going thru blogland so here goes.

The rules are -- answer the questions another blogger asks and then tag eleven more bloggers asking your own eleven questions. Here are her questions and my answers
  1. How do you feel about blended threads as in Teresa Wentzler's projects? (personally I hate them, I'd rather use hand dyed threads)
  2. Do you launder your project before framing? (only if absolutely necessary, ie you can see the dirt!)
  3.  How do you feel about the lack of colour fast in all the flosses now? (fine with me, I rarely wash them)
  4. When you begin a project with a black and white chart how do you choose which symbol to begin with? (I typically start in the middle (unless a Mystic or HAED) then find a symbol that is the used the most)
  5. Do you do your own framing? (sometimes)
  6. Do you choose your own mats and moldings or let someone else tell you what you would like? (If I'm having it matted and framed professional, I let them give their opinion, but it's still my final decision. And it usually hits me when I see it)
  7. Pins or Lace (lace)
  8. Do you have any wall space for a new project? (of course, you can never run out can you? Plus my new craft room can hold some more)
  9. Have you ever gifted a finished piece right off your wall because someone really liked it? (nope)
  10. Would you stitch it again for yourself?
(depends, if I could depart with it so easily, I might not have been in love with it anyway!)
Do you have a group of friends whom share the love of stitching with you on a regular basis? (I have a group of friends online that I see occasionally. I would love to have some closer so it could be at least a monthly occurrence)

Now for my questions:
1. Have you tried any other finishing techniques than framing? YES, TONS!
2. If not, why not?
3. Do people ever comment on your stitching in your home (if they don't know you are a stitcher) Sometimes
4. What's the most expensive piece you have ever done? Chatelaine Tuscany Town Mandela-chart , material, silks, beads probably over $200
5.What's the most expensive finish you've paid for? Did you keep it? Same as above. Jill Rensel matted it and then I paid for the frame. That was over $300
6. Do you think about your stitching every day.....even when you can't stitch?Of course
7.Have you gone out of state or country to meet with other stitchers? YEP
8. Have you ever given a stitched piece to someone and received a better response than you thought? Yes
9. What do you do with your patterns you have stitched? Sometimes if I really like it I keep it, sometimes I gift it to someone else who'd love to give it a new home.
10. What's the biggest change in your stitching since you started? Finding out about hand dyed material and over dyed threads
11. Do you budget for your hobby, or just buy when and what you want??? If I like it, I buy it
I'm not going to tag 11 more, but feel free to answer my questions in the comment section. I'd like to hear your answers!!!

    1. 1. Have you tried any other finishing techniques than framing? Yes several years ago I used to do many different things with my finishes but not anymore.
      2. If not, why not? The stitching looks best professionally framed so that is what I usually do.
      3. Do people ever comment on your stitching in your home (if they don't know you are a stitcher) Yes.
      4. What's the most expensive piece you have ever done? I honestly don't know. I buy the materials at different times and places and have never added up the cost. I am frugal though and I won't spend in abundance. I buy charts on ebay and get the supplies at 123stitch.
5.What's the most expensive finish you've paid for? Did you keep it? My most expensive frame job so far is Fairy Flora, yes, I still have it.
      6. Do you think about your stitching every day.....even when you can't stitch? Yes, I am always thinking about stitching.
7.Have you gone out of state or country to meet with other stitchers? No
      8. Have you ever given a stitched piece to someone and received a better response than you thought? I rarely give anything away, my most recent give away was a Passione Ricamo to my sister and I believe she loved it.
      9. What do you do with your patterns you have stitched? I used to sell them but now I just keep them.
      10. What's the biggest change in your stitching since you started? Lately, I only stitch big designs like Mirabilias that can (should) be framed. And they need to be elegant or artistic.
      11. Do you budget for your hobby, or just buy when and what you want??? I buy what I want but I usually won't want something if I think the price is too high, there are plenty of other designs to stitch that are reasonably priced.

  2. I'm going to answer both sets of questions, Nancy, since I'm nosey, I'll pretend you are as well, lol. How do you feel about blended threads as in Teresa Wentzler's projects? I love them. They give you a bigger range of color, and it's not hard to put different colors in the needle. It's part of the reason I love Dimension's kits.
Do you launder your project before framing? I don't launder, but I spot clean. Anyplace the dirt is visible, it gets cleaned.
How do you feel about the lack of colour fast in all the flosses now? I don't see why they can't figure out a way to make them colorfast. I'm sure there's a way to do it. Of course, it's not my call either, sooooo...
When you begin a project with a black and white chart how do you choose which symbol to begin with? It depends on several things. If it's confetti heavy, I pick one of the confetti symbols and start there. I do all the confetti, and then go back and fill in the main colors. Easier that way. If it's not confetti heavy, it depends on where I start. If I start in the upper left corner (my HAEDs), I start with the first symbol. If It's a project with irregular edges, I start in the middle, and generally pick the closest color to the center.
Do you do your own framing? No, I leave it to the professionals.
Do you choose your own mats and moldings or let someone else tell you what you would like? I'm with you on this one. I allow others (sometimes mom, sometimes a friend, sometimes Jerry, my framer) to make suggestions, but I make the final decision. And boy, sometimes I see something on the wall and think, eh. Then Jerry puts in on the mat and stitching and it's like, "WOW!!!!" When it hits you, it hits you, lol.
Pins or Lace? Lace, definitely. I'm terrified of a pin rusting, and ruining it.
Do you have any wall space for a new project? Well, yes, for now. Unfortunately, I'm gonna have to buy a house someday, cause my wall space in the apartment is limited. A house with two bedrooms, and a finished basement. (All the wall space down there, and room for all my books and stitchy stuff. I'll have my own little space. Heck, I'll probably turn into the thing that lives beneath the stairs, lol.
Have you ever gifted a finished piece right off your wall because someone really liked it? No, and I'm not sure I would. It would depend on how well I know the person, and what size the piece was.
Would you stitch it again for yourself?
Absolutely, I've stitched more than one thing twice.
Do you have a group of friends whom share the love of stitching with you on a regular basis? I do. I have my Rosa who is in North Carolina. She's an awesome friend. Then I have Julie who's two hours north of me in Columbus. We get together in the flesh several times a year. And I have a ton (I really mean that) of blogger and email friends that I share things with. Also, I occasionally go to the EGA meetings here in Cincinnati. They're a nice group of ladies.

  3. Now for my questions:
    1. Have you tried any other finishing techniques than framing? Not really. Sewing machines scare me, lol. That said, I wouldn't mind trying a flatfold or a no sew cube. I just have to do a small piece that would be good for that, and most of mine are huge. Except the ornies. Maybe I could make those into no sew cubes and hand them on my tree.
    2. If not, why not? LOL, see above.
    3. Do people ever comment on your stitching in your home (if they don't know you are a stitcher)? In my old place, people commented, but no one who didn't know I was a stitcher. Here, I don't have anything up yet. (I know, and I've been here for a year!!!!)
    4. What's the most expensive piece you have ever done? Definitely Chatelaine Desert Landscapes Mandala. I've got about two fifty in it if you count fabby, beads, and floss. (Kit was two seventeen, fabby was thirty six, and then there were DMC colors needed. I'm averageing, lol.)
5.What's the most expensive finish you've paid for? Did you keep it? I haven't finished Desert Landscapes yet, but when I do it will be my most expensive. I want to dedicate it to my dad, since A.) he said I would never finish it (pessimist, lol) and B.) I did a lot of the work at his house. I'm planning on having Jill do mine too Nancy. GMTA, and all that. To date, my most expensive one is Cat Lessons for People, which Randi made for me. It was a little under a hundred. Ninety six or eight, but I can't remember.
    6. Do you think about your stitching every day.....even when you can't stitch?Of course
7.Have you gone out of state or country to meet with other stitchers? Heck, I've gone out of country!!! So, yes, definitely.
    8. Have you ever given a stitched piece to someone and received a better response than you thought? Yes, and I've also received a worse reaction. I think it all depends on the person.
    9. What do you do with your patterns you have stitched? I've been known to give them away to other stitchers, unless it's something I think I'll stitch again.
    10. What's the biggest change in your stitching since you started? Oh, wow. That's tough. I've made so many changes. I rotate now, where before I was a one at a time gal. I have WIPs and UFOs and SALs. I have a schedule I stick to with stitching (certain SALs on certain days of the week, rotation on the other days). It keeps me interested to keep changing things up, so I stay motivated.
    11. Do you budget for your hobby, or just buy when and what you want??? Well, sort of both. I buy my stitchy things at the beginning of the month, and then the rest of the month, I adjust my food and other expenditures to match. Not the best way to do it, but it works for me.
