For those of you who have a blog, do you make the people who comment use the *word verification*?? If you do......do you think you will have a problem with spammers if you didn't?
If not, do you have a problem with spammers?
I am asking because I have had to retype many a comment because I hit *post* and close the window out, only to see the word verification box come up as the window closes and then I have lost it!!!!
I have really started to hate the verification thing and just wondered if anyone else is feeling the same way. Please feel free to leave your comments....and you will not be asked to *verify it* either! LOL
Nope, it doesn't bother me at all. I have mine that way so I can see each and every one of the wonderful comments that are left behind. I don't want to miss a single one since they all mean so much to me.
ReplyDeleteSandy, you can still have emails that someone left a comment even without the word verification.
ReplyDeleteI had to turn on the word verification on my blog because of spammers. I not only got spammy emails but also spammy posts to my blog. I visit a lot of blogs that use it and while it takes a bit of extra time I don't mind it.
ReplyDeleteFINALLY....finally someone says what is on my mind since ages. These word verifications irritate me to no avail. I'm going to visit heaps of blogs, take the effort to read everything, admire the pictures and work, and then I get the word verification above that. And have to retype it regularly.
ReplyDeleteThere are days where I simply won't. I type it, hit the button, if it disappears or if I have to retype a loooooooong one, I simply close the window and wander further. Stuff it.
I have no word verification on my blog and never ever had a problem with a spammer. In more then a year of blogging not ONCE did I have a spammer. And you know what? IF I get a spammer on my non protected blog, I simply delete that comment. Can't be easier then that. And IF I get a problem, then I MIGHT put word verification on for a while. It's easy enough to turn on and OFF again.
And the worst thing is if the word verification is set to the highest level as if the crown jewels have to be protected instead of a simple private blog
Phew...got that off my chest.
Amen, Amen, and Amen! I have a ton of blogs on my reader and I really do try to get to them. But when I leave a comment and then WV pops up after I think it's gone through; I normally lose the comment. Sorry, but I don't always have the time to go back and rewrite.
ReplyDeleteA long time ago, a friend mentioned how WV wasted so much time; made me think why I had it to begin with. It was because I'd seen it on other blogs and thought I was supposed to! I deleted it and have never had a problem with spammers, etc. If it ever should become a problem, then I'll put it back or delete said comments. But the time saver it is for me going through lots of blogs is tremendous. So I'm thankful for those without it.
I've noticed that really large blogs such as Let's Stitch, Our Friend's HAED SAL, etc. live without them, too. Good enough for me. :)
PS - WV shouldn't have anything to do with seeing comments, I don't think. I haven't noticed it if it does. Each of my comments posts to my blog and comes to my e-mail, too (w/o WV) IMHO
ReplyDeleteI didn't put WV on my blog because people were telling me that they were having problems leaving comments when I first started my blog. Later I found out that it was problems relating to the comment form popping up at the bottom of the post, rather than as a separate page. ?? I am just glad that what I post actually shows up in a blog entry, so I made the changes and knock on wood, everything's been fine for me. I hope I don't have to deal with spammers. The thing that does stick out for me, though, is that a lot of people who might comment are NOT blogger bloggers, or even bloggers at all. It took me eons as a non-blogger with a gmail e-mail acct to figure out how to post comments under my google account... so I try to make it easy for anybody that wants to take the time to comment. I don't mind the WV but chose to take the chance to omit it for my blog--for now! At least, ahem, I think it's off... LOL
ReplyDeleteThis is very relevant information for me. After reading all your comments I am going to turn off the WV I have on my blog. If you don't get spammers I probably won't either. And posting comments is so much easier without!
ReplyDeleteThank you for asking this question, Nancy1
It iritates the heck out of me especially when they have WV on and also the comments are moderated. What the heck's that all about? If comments are moderated, why the heck have WV on? Some things never cease to amaze me lol. Oh and for the record, I have three blogs on blogger and have never been spammed.
ReplyDeleteJust my honest opinion.
Interesting post and interesting comments. I am going back to my blog and check WV now. Having WV has never really bothered me except for those times when you have to repeat it three or four times. And I always wait to see if the comment is posted before moving on. No WV will definitly save time for everyone. Which means more blogs to read. :)
ReplyDeleteOne question though. How do you get email notification of a comment without the comments being moderated? I always wondered about that one.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI dislike when the word verification shows up AFTER you hit post. I don't mind if it's there from the beginning.
ReplyDeleteThat said I do understand why we need to have WV as it's important to make sure we are not spammed and the like.
word verifications irritate me, but i see their purpose. i didn't even know i had the choice to turn them off until yesterday. i am going to experiment & turn them off & see if i get spammed or not. if i do, they're going back on!
ReplyDeleteIt irritates me but I had to turn it on on my blog too because I've had spammers posting dangerous links in the comment section. There is extra annoyance when WV and comment moderation are both in effect. But some blogs allow anonymous posters. I don't. Only when I post a PIF or a giveaway, but after that I get back to the original setting. But I don't moderate.
ReplyDeleteKathy, on blogger you must click on Settings on your Dashboard, then go to the Comments tab. On the bottom of that page you see Comment Notification Email, write your address there and then they will e-mail you with every comment. You can also put them on your Google Reader in case you're using that.
Well, I've debated...leave it on or leave it off....heck why is it there in the first place? lol...
ReplyDeleteYes it does iritate me but I guess some have a reason for it. I didn't realize I had wv enabled on my blog so when I checked I took it off.
ReplyDeleteI don't really like the verification thingie, to often I miss it (like in your example) or I mistype and have to do it over again etcetc.
ReplyDeleteOn my own blog (wordpress) I have that first time commenters have to be approved by me and then can comment freely after that, works out very well.
When I first started blogging, almost a year ago, I noticed when I was trying to post to other's blogs, that had the WV on it, that it wouldn't pop up correctly enough for me to be able to copy the letters! Sheesh! So I immediately went and took mine off, grief, I sure didn't want someone coming to my blog and being so aggravated they wouldn't comment! lol Haven't had a bit of trouble since...and I do enjoy the ones that don't have it enabled. But to each his own, and for those that do, I will continue to comment, it just might take a little longer!
ReplyDeleteI tell you I learn something new everyday. I wondered why on one or two blogs I didn't have to do WV and on all of the others I did. So I went in and looked and changed mine. Thank you for mentioning it! I hated it on other blogs.
ReplyDeleteHi Nancy! I know two who have theirs set to moderation, one I know for certain had a lot of problems with some young guy who just couldn't seem to stop himself from posting stupid, non-related messages on her blog.
ReplyDeleteI have never had a problem with Word Verifcation for those who use it. The way I understand it is it is meant to help keep out bot spammers, not human spammers. At least the letters are large and clear, unlike some social network sites which shall remain nameless.
I've actually gotten quite a few spammer comments, that's why I turned mine on years ago. I'd get spam comments on 2-3 posts at a time. I don't know why, but I do.
